This blog was created for a Graduate Studies Proseminar in New Media Studies @ DePaul University (Chicago, USA). The intentions of the blog was to document our experience with various forms of new media including social media, video, web, print, text & image, and all that other ’stuff’—-As I finish the graduate program, I no longer update this blog.
My official professional blog: http:edutechgeek.wordpress.com covers instructional design, technical writing, eLearning, and performance technologies.
I was going to post trailers and/or good clips from the docs I think are worth adding to any collection….in the meanwhile, you can watch them on the PBS/Frontline website.
Initially, I bad mouthed my G1 phone from Tmobile. After some attempts to sell it on CraigsList and coming across a slew of strange people, I decided to re-use this thing.
Now that I have been forced to give it a chance, I actually like the phone. There are some really kool applications. My fave would be one called “Shop Savvy.” I type in the barcode for an item I am interested in and this program tells me local and online stores where I can purchase the item for less! WOW!
Let’s see, what else….hmmmmm. I downloaded the King James Bible and the U.S.Constitution. For what? I dk. It is still pretty awesome to have those publications (?) at my fingertips. So when I am about to curse out some crazy person on the Red Line, I can just read the Word of GOD on my phone. And instantly, I refrain from exhibiting any non Christ-like behaviour.
The “Eljay” application (Eljay aka LJ aka Live Journal) is a great idea for anyone who likes to make small posts to their Live Journal blogs. But, the app has been acting up and not posting my posts. And the application does not have the ability to post to other communities, only to your personal page. So, I can not post to the thinkpositive30 community on LJ, only my own journal. Small steps.
Also, G1 allows you to contact the creator of an app for questions and/or suggestions. Pretty awesome!
The Bestest App of them ALL…. the “OBAMA” application where I get instant access to all blogs, photos, videos, and news pertaining to the 44th Presidente! Hands down, this makes it all worth it!!!
Made something I actually like in HCI 402 (Foundation of Digital Design). After editing, I actually see the potential in my print design skill. It’s there. I know it!
Found a Frontline documentary called, “Growing Up Onine.” About the new media driven lifestyle of today’s teenager.
I really enjoy documentary film = education + video = educational technology. A way for me to put that Theatre degree to use…Lord, I hope so.
Back to my point…
Definitely speaking to Andrew Norman’s instrumental theory of technlogy as the tool. It is what people do with the technology that makes it good or bad.
Well, let me send the parents and school administrators interviewed in this documentary a memo: it’s ur children, not the tool, that makes them act a fool on their MySpace pages, bully other students on AIM, post overtly sexual pictures of themselves on the Facebook…
What I found a wee bit frustrating is how the documentary does not focus on the positive ways in which our youth use Internet technology.
Well they did talk about students completing some of their high school curriculum online. But that was a segway into ’Academic Cheating’, so…teeter, totter.
Perhaps the positives were not the purpose. Nothing malicious, just not the focus of their information sharing goals. Which is okay (or is it?) because children are being bullied on the Internet so fiercly it is leading to suicides. And the cyber pervs are out in full force. Considering this, I’d say these issues deserve some Frontline attention.
And in these 7 days I have experienced: repeated ‘no connection’ messages, a battery that drains while the phone is idle, stalling screen, two aim applications that are always disconnecting, a touch screen that works when it wants to, and the list goes on.
I am considering returning the phone and just going back to the Bberry club, but I don’t want to.
Y can’t technology just work?!
Y did I have to get this phone as soon as it was released?!
Guinea pig, yes I am.
With all bad, comes some good…
The good thing is I can watch youTube vids, but not videos from other site . Also, there are a bunch of really kool applications, like one called Bartender and MyCloset…get drunk while digitally organizing my clothes, shoes, and accessories.
All-in-all, I just want it to hold a signal and keep me connected to my aim life. I dont even think I can view MS Office documents like I can with my Bberry.
